The primary objective of this project is to, put simply, redesign my motorcycle. I have a 2007 Honda CBR 1000RR, which I will be stripping down and redoing the bodywork, exhaust, seat, headlight, tail light, and all of the necessary in-between fabrication and painting in order to create a unique Neo-Retro design. To pair with the motorcycle, I will be designing a booklet describing my process and experiences throughout this project.
Conceptualizing
In the first stages of the project, I did a series of sketches to explore which direction I want to go, and finding a middle ground between retro and modern. With the first set of sketches being a bit too retro, and the next leaning towards futuristic, I had finally found my direction with the fourth paper sketch.
3D Scanning
I had aspirations of learning 3D modeling softwares to help me make a model of my design, so I took a 3D scan of my motorcycle with the help of my lovely girlfriend. I quickly realized this was too ambitious given that I have very little experience with those programs. Interestingly, the bike had to be covered in baby powder in order for the scanner to pick up the darker areas. Although I won't be making a digital 3D model, I figured I could still utilize the scan in my further illustrations...after spending hours cleaning baby powder out of all of the bike's crevices.
Finalizing
These are a culmination of a couple sketches and a hyper-realistic illustration of my final design idea, which of course would later get revised...several times. The final version (for now) is the larger image below.
